Let’s Talk About Eczema (And Why It’s So Frustrating)

Here’s the thing: eczema doesn’t care how “clean” your skincare is or how much you spend on moisturizer. If your skin barrier is stressed and inflamed, it’s gonna let you know.

I’ve had eczema since I was a kid—neck, elbows, behind the knees, sometimes my face. I used to cover it up, hide it, and honestly, feel ashamed. Now? I manage it, not expecting perfection. I just want comfort and calm.

“Eczema affects over 31 million people in the U.S. alone.” –
National Eczema Association

What Actually Worked For Me (No Steroid Shaming Here)

1. Repair the Skin Barrier First

  • Cleanser: Dove Sensitive Skin Bar – gentle, no fragrance, never leaves me tight
  • Moisturizers:
    • CeraVe Moisturizing Cream – ceramides = barrier love
    • Aveeno Eczema Therapy Balm – colloidal oatmeal calms everything down
    • Vanicream – when my skin says “leave me alone”
    • Cetaphil – light and solid for summer

Tip: Always apply right after the shower while your skin’s still damp.

2. Know Your Triggers (and Your Skin’s Mood Swings)

For me: dairy, sugar, and synthetic fragrance are no-gos. Other big ones include scratchy fabrics, sulfates, stress, and weather. I track flare-ups using a basic skin diary.

3. Stick to Simple, Consistent Protection

  • Sunscreen: Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 50+ – no white cast, no sting
  • Laundry detergent: fragrance-free only
  • Oil sealant: Castor oil for itchy, flaky patches

My Favorite Products for Eczema Relief

Product Why I Recommend It
Dove Sensitive Skin Bar
Non-stripping, derm-approved, $5
Aveeno Eczema Therapy Balm Oatmeal-based and NEA-approved
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream Ceramides + rich texture = barrier win
Vanicream Ultra-gentle for sensitive days
Castor Oil Locks in moisture without irritating
Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 50+ Mineral-free, eczema-safe SPF

All fragrance-free, non-irritating, and ideal for sensitive skin.

When Flare-Ups Hit: What I Do

  • Don’t scratch. Use a fidget toy if you need to.
  • Take a cool oatmeal bath (plain oats in a muslin bag)
  • Apply barrier cream + seal with castor oil
  • Use steroid cream if you really need it
  • Hydrate. A lot.

If the flare isn’t calming in 3 days or looks infected, see a dermatologist. No shame.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need 10 steps. You need 2–3 products that actually work—and a routine that’s not overwhelming.

I used to dread my skincare. Now it’s grounding. I enjoy it. That’s the difference.
